Attorney General William P. Barr appointed John Cody Barnes as an immigration judge in June 2020. Judge Barnes ear ned a Bachelor of Science in 2002 from Texas A&M University and a Juris Doctor in 2009 from Ave Maria School of Law. From 2018 to 2020, he served as an assistant U.S. attorney at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas, in Corpus Christi, Texas. From 2017 to 2018, he served as the editor of The Army Lawyer, Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, in Charlottesville, Virginia. From 2015 to 2017, he served as a training officer, Defense Counsel Assistance Program, U.S. Army, at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. From 2013 to 2015, he served as defense counsel, U.S. Army, in the following locations: Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. From 2010 to 2013, he served first as a labor counsel for a year, and then as a trial counsel/special assistant U.S. attorney, U.S. Army, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Judge Barnes is a member of the State Bar of Texas.
