- Extensions
- No formal extension-of-stay filing; D/S continues while recognized. G-2 is NOT on the specific list of visas the Diplomatic Liaison Division will renew domestically (that list is limited to A-1, A-2, G-1, G-4, NATO-1, and NATO-6, per travel.state.gov's 'Renewal is Limited to Certain Visa Holders' section) - despite a general introductory line on the same page describing 'G-1-4' as renewable, the operative, more specific list excludes G-2. G-2 holders must obtain a new visa at a US Embassy/Consulate abroad.
- Work
- Employment authorized only in the official representative capacity.
- Dual intent

What changed in 2025 and 2026
- 2025-09-18: G-2 confirmed on the interview-waiver-eligible list effective October 1, 2025.
- 2026-01-01: Presidential Proclamation 10998 entry suspension took effect for 39 countries; 'certain diplomatic and official visas' are exempted, which secondary legal sources identify as covering G visas.
Where it goes wrong
- Cannot renew the visa inside the US despite G-1/G-3/G-4 sometimes being described together - G-2 must apply abroad
- Dependents can never work under this classification, unlike G-1/G-3/G-4 dependents
