G-884 Request for the Return of Original Documents
Asks USCIS to send back original documents it holds in a file - birth certificates, marriage certificates, foreign passports, and similar papers submitted with an earlier application. USCIS will not return anything it treats as a government record, such as an approval notice.
- Fee
- $0
- Fee waiver
- Not available
- Who files
- The person who submitted the originals, or their representative.
- Where to file
- By mail to the USCIS office holding the file, or with a new filing.
What changed in 2025 and 2026
- Filing this instead of sending copies is the standard fix when an office kept an original by mistake. USCIS asks for copies of the documents you want back.
