I-407 Record of Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status
Formally gives up a green card. People file it when they have moved abroad for good, or when a consular officer or CBP officer tells them their residence has lapsed. It is voluntary: no officer can require it, and signing it at a port of entry under pressure has real consequences, including for future visas and for U.S. tax residency.

- Signing an I-407 is irreversible without a new immigrant petition. Anyone pressed to sign one at an airport should ask to see an immigration judge instead - only a judge can order abandonment against the person's will.
